A college in Xi'an has been gaining a lot of attention(關(guān)注 guānzhù) on social media(社交媒體) in China for posting signs with amusing slogans(標(biāo)語(yǔ)) to discourage students from smoking.
The anti-smoking signs posted at the Xi'an Traffic Engineering Institute have gained praise(表?yè)P(yáng) biǎo jiāo) on Weibo for the humourous(幽默的 yōumò de) and down-to-earth(接地氣的 jiē dì qì de) tone, with some slogans writing "you won't find a girlfriend/boyfriend if you smoke(吸煙找不到對(duì)象 Xīyān zhǎo bù dào duìxiàng)", and "– What's our slogan? – To ban smoking!(我們的口號(hào)是什么?-禁煙 wǒmen de kǒuhào shì shénme? - Jìnyān)"
By doing this, the institute hopes to help students make more health-conscious choices(選擇 xuǎnzé) as opposed to directly forcing(強(qiáng)迫 qiǎngpò) them to give up smoking(戒煙 jièyān), according to university professor Zuo Chenxi.
As the world's largest tobacco(煙草 yāncǎo) producer and consumer, China is home to over 300 million smokers, of which half of the men are regular smokers, and as many as two thirds of Chinese men start(開(kāi)始 kāishǐ) smoking at a young age, according to estimates from the World Health Organization.
Various(不同的 bùtóng de) measures(措施 cuòshī) have been used(使用 shǐyòng) in the past to regulate(規(guī)范 guīfàn) and control(控制 kòngzhì) tobacco use in public spaces in the country. In major cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, various laws against indoor smoking have been introduced.
