After six years of construction, the first hydropower project along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Karot Hydropower Station, has closed the gates of its diversion tunnels, and has officially started to impound water. It marked the completion of around 95 percent of the project, which is expected to go into operation in 2022. The project is funded and built by China Three Gorges Corporation. N.A. Zubeiri, the Senior Consultant of the China Three Gorges South Asia Investment Ltd., told CGTN that, once completed, consumers in Pakistan will get cheaper electricity from this basic project.
